Carbon Monoxide(commonly known as CO) is a highly poisonous gas. CO gas has no smell, taste or color. It’s produced when fossil fuels such as wood, coal or natural gas are burned and there is not enough air supply.
Carbon Monoxide kills on average up to 30 people each year and many more people are injured as a result of faulty gas appliances.
To protect yourself from CO make sure your central heating boiler is maintained by a CORGI registered engineer.
For extra peace of mind you should fit a British Standard approved carbon monoxide detector with an audible alarm.
Appliances that burn wood, coal or natural gas need ventilation to ensure they burn correctly. You should keep all vents in doors, walls or windows free from obstructions.
Appliances that have signs of staining, sooting or discoloration on or around fires, boilers or water heaters could pose a threat. Gas appliances should normally burn blue, if the flame changes to yellow or orange it could mean that carbon monoxide is present.
Other signs of carbon monoxide poisoning can be recognized by persistent human side affects such as:
If you or your family suffers persistently with the above you should STOP using your gas appliance and get it checked by a CORGI registered engineer. Alternatively, call Transco Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999.
It would also be a good idea to consult your doctor.
You should buy a British Standard approved detector. You can also purchase cardboard detectors. These have a colored spot that changes color if carbon monoxide is present. However these are not recommended as they only have a life span of up to 6 months.
Carbon monoxide detectors are available in hardware stores, but make sure they are British Standard with audible alarms!
